Sea Turtle Conservation & Volunteer Projects

Various species of sea turtles can be found along the Sri Lankan coastline but unfortunately their numbers are dwindling globally. Thanks to our charitable partnership with Travelteer UK, we have access to an ethically focused hatchery that looks to boost these numbers through artificial nesting and the rehabilitation of injured turtles brought in by local fishermen.

In addition to Travelteer’s hatchery, guests of the Lakehouse will have access to a variety of Travelteer’s Marine & Wildlife Conservation projects including beach cleans, rainforest replantation and more!

Explore Buddhist Temples

Guests will enjoy a tour around our local Buddhist temple and receive a blessing.

It is quite an experience to see the serenity, spiritualism and committed service of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. Around 6,000 Buddhist monasteries exist in Sri Lanka with approximately 15,000 monks and, in many places, from the jungles to the beaches, you will hear chanting coming from all directions at sunrise.

Exploring Hikkaduwa

The Lakehouse Retreat is just a stone’s throw from the beautiful beachside town of Hikkaduwa.

Popular with surfers since the 70’s, groups will be spoilt for choice when it comes to local produce, cafes, bars and shops - there are options to suit every type of traveller.

Sandy beaches span the entire length of the town and you will always be able to hear the Indian Ocean pounding the coastline. Hikkaduwa is also perfectly situated for breathtaking sunsets - the sun sinks over the ocean horizon and lights up the whole area each evening.

Visit Galle Fort

The UNESCO Heritage site of Galle Fort is only a short TukTuk ride away from the Lakehouse Retreat. Originally built in 1588 by the Portuguese and then fortified by the Dutch during the 17th Century, it is of stark contrast to the surrounding area.

The fort is home to many upscale restaurants, boutique hotels and beautifully designed shops selling high quality, locally designed clothing and jewellery. Walking the walls of the fort gives amazing views down the coastline and you will see many locals swimming and fishing in the clear waters.
